By following a few guidelines from a beauty professional at PS Salon, which offers its services to seven Capital Senior Living communities around the country, you can look as young as you feel by amplifying the natural beauty you already have.
When it comes to applying makeup, one big mistake senior women can avoid is adding layer upon layer of foundation and concealer to their faces, making their skin look cakey. In fact, thicker layers can enhance the appearance of wrinkles. Instead of choosing a heavy foundation, opt for a tinted moisturizer or lightweight foundation with an SPF. Lighter foundations will help cover dark spots without drawing attention to wrinkles.
Eyelashes tend to get overlooked in a beauty routine, but don’t forget about them. Curling your lashes with just a few pumps can make your eyes look more awake and vibrant. Also, before heading into eyeliner and eye shadow, apply a primer to your eyelids. This will help keep your eye products from smudging throughout the day. When applying eyeliner and eye shadow, keep your look soft and natural. The more products you pile onto your eyelids, the heavier and more aged your eyes will end up looking.
Ashley Holz, District Manager II of the Eastern Michigan region of PS Salon, recommends simple, natural looks for seniors. “When we’re applying makeup, we really try to focus on a few products and keep it simple. Something that we try to stay away from is any makeup with glitter or shimmer to it. These products increase the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. Matte-finish products are generally the best way to go.”
Adding pops of color to your face can help give a senior woman a more energetic and youthful appearance. Try applying a rosy shade of blush to the apples of your cheeks when you’re heading out on that community outing, meeting friends at your local senior center or having lunch or dinner at a local restaurant with your adult child or grandchildren.
Contouring is also a popular makeup trend that’s not just for today’s youth. This practice enhances the structure of a face by highlighting areas you’d like to define (such as the tops of cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, a forehead or chin) and shadowing areas such as puffed cheeks that you don’t’ want to draw attention to.
“Adding a contour really modernizes the look,” Holz says. “A lot of people get scared by contouring, but it can be an easy process. Just remember the number three. Start in the temple area with your contour shade - that’s about three shades darker than your foundation. Then move down to your cheekbone and finish at your jawline to create a number three. This creates a contour effect.”
No matter your age, it’s important to have or implement a skincare routine that may be as simple as cleansing, moisturizing and applying SPF. Take it one step further and add in an exfoliator a few times a week to get rid of dead skin cells. A monthly facial will help renew your skin and give you some much-needed pampering that you deserve.
Whether you’re a fan of makeup or not, one product that’s a must-have for women and men is moisturizer. Applying moisturizer every morning and night will help hydrate your skin, fight against aging and protect your body’s largest organ from the environment. When applying moisturizer, don’t press down or pull your skin. Use a light, circular motion with two fingers so that you don’t encourage more wrinkles to form.
“Moisturizing is a step that a lot of people miss, but is very important,” Holz says. “It also creates a barrier for the skin from any potential harmful irritants in a product you may be using for the first time.”
If you desire a moisturizer that focuses on anti-aging, check the label for a few key ingredients. Retinol, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and Alpha-Hydroxy Acids have been shown to promote elasticity in the skin, which helps reduce wrinkles.
Sunscreen is another necessary product that will protect your skin from harmful UV rays and help prevent the formation of dark spots and wrinkles. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen on your hands and forearms that are often exposed to the sun when driving or being outdoors in your courtyard or anywhere on your community’s beautifully landscaped grounds.
In addition to moisturizer, applying eye cream will give that extra boost of hydration to your eye area and help combat crow’s feet. “Eye creams are something that I always recommend to our residents. It will help keep your skin looking its best,” Holz says.
Water may not be a makeup product in your kit, but it’s an important ingredient in your skincare regimen. Drinking adequate amounts of water - it’s recommended that you imbibe eight glasses each day - helps quench your skin and combat dryness, one of the culprits of aging skin.
If you’re over the age of 50, that doesn’t mean you have to don the classic short bob haircut. A hairstyle is a personal preference. While a short bob is easy to maintain, medium length and long hair can be options to complete your overall appearance. To add a bit of fun to your hairstyle, try adding straight or side bangs. These can complement your face shape while adding the extra benefit of covering any forehead wrinkles.
“I love when our customers have long, gorgeous hair,” Holz says. “I think it’s the new trend. I don’t think that just because you hit 50 you need a short hairstyle.”
When it comes to hair color, it can be tempting to cover all your greys with a full hair dye job. However, this can make your new grey roots stand out even more against the darker hair. Whether you’re a woman or man, lowlights could be an ideal alternative to dyeing every strand of your hair. Lowlights involve darkening strands of your hair by using colors that are darker than your natural color.
“My biggest recommendation right now is to add a lowlight rather than dying all the hair,” Holz says. “When you color hair at a medium-brown, you’ll see an aggressive grow out of white hair that just goes from one color to the next. We try to transition that grow out phase by foiling in a lowlight so that the hair color will fade gradually together.”
As you age, your hair can become more brittle and lose its volume. A volumizing shampoo can add some fullness to your hairstyle. Moroccan oil, coconut oil and argan bring back moisture and softness to hair. Deep conditioning will also make hair healthier and get rid of any lingering hair products.
